Thursday was the last morning for students in Ascension Parish to sleep in, as Friday marks the first day of school.

The Manship Theatre is gearing up for a new season of spectacular performances. Janie Oldfield joined us with a preview of this season's hottest acts.

A vote to put more money in your pockets could go down on Thursday, but it's up to the Livingston Parish School Board. The tax base increased by 28 percent after the parish reassessed property values this year. That means governmental bodies can roll millages back and still make the money they need.

The Tangipahoa Animal Shelter is under quarantine. Parish leaders say a highly contagious virus infected half the dogs and cats in the shelter, and 170 animals were put down as a precaution.

A statewide council charged with studying social issues affecting black men is the first of its kind in Louisiana. The Louisiana Council on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys is a new state-funded group.

It's not often that people brag on the play of your offensive line before the start of the season, but that's exactly what's happening concerning the guys in the LSU offensive trenches.

Students at an academically unacceptable Baton Rouge school will be greeted by a new teaching staff and a new game plan on the first day of class Thursday. The state gave a failing grade to the Capitol Boys and Girls Pre-College Academies last year, and the group 100 Black Men has since taken over to try and turn the school around.

Not much rain is expected on Wednesday, but how about the rest of your week? Chief Forecaster Pat Shingleton has your forecast.

Baton Rouge firefighters are investigating what they are calling a suspicious fire. The incident happened at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Brandywine Apartments on Darryl Drive.

Thousands of Louisiana youngsters are close to going back to school, including those in Zachary, the state's top school system. Superintendent of Zachary community schools Warren Drake joined us on 2une In Wednesday morning.

Louisiana's Teacher of the Year Deborah Tonguis talks about winning the award, her inspiration for becoming a teacher, and gives advice for the upcoming school year.

A list of people who may be responsible for flyers bashing Mayor Kip Holden got shorter Tuesday. A Republican who mailed the flyers accusing Holden of inappropriate conduct won't say who paid him to mass-mail them, but he did clear the air concerning one mayoral candidate.

Cleanup is under way in southwest Louisiana after Tropical Storm Eduoard made landfall along the Texas coast Tuesday morning. One area affected by the storm was Cameron Parish.

Some Ascension Parish students will find themselves in a brand-new school when classes begin this week. Two new schools, Prairieville Primary and Pecan Grove, are supposed to ease overcrowding in the district.

While the LSU quarterback position remains the big question mark this fall with three viable candidates, who they'll be handing the ball off to is a lot more comforting. The Tiger corps of tailbacks is as good as any unit in the country.

Coach Pete Richardson is looking for Darren Coates' replacement as Southern's featured running back, but he has no controversy when it comes to his starting QB. SWAC preseason Offensive Player of the Year Bryant Lee is back to run the Jaguar offense.

There are questions about a shootout in Baton Rouge that wounded two deputies, as the people involved don't agree on how things went down. The incident happened overnight Monday while the deputies tried to serve a warrant.

Metro Council member Byron Sharper is making demands to look at Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden's daily schedule. Sharper also wants the council to have access to Holden's personal bodyguards and their records. The demands come after a flyer was sent to thousands of households last week accusing the mayor of inappropriate conduct.

A long-neglected part of Baton Rouge is set to get a major facelift as part of Operation Restore Pride. The initiative comes from the mayor's office.

A 1-year-old child is in the hospital in Baton Rouge while her mother sits in jail. Police charged Shameela Kinchen of Baton Rouge with cruelty and resisting arrest.

There are Tigers back on the practice fields in Baton Rouge, and the kickoff for local college football is just a scant 27 days away. \

As Tropical Storm Edouard continues to track west, state officials are not taking any chances. Gov. Bobby Jindal talked this morning about what residents can expect from the storm and how the state plans to deal with the situation.

School will be in session for many students by the end of the week and many will be reaching for an energy drink in the morning. Dr. Matt Chamberlain with Our Lady of the Lake joined us with more on why you should choose an alternative.

A mailer filled with personal charges against Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden is causing a storm in the Capital City. Holden says the charges are false, and he says Kurt Sharper, the brother of Metro Council member Byron Sharper, has distributed some of the flyers.

The search is on for SWAT gear and electronics that were inside an SUV stolen from a Livingston Parish Sheriff deputy's home. The unmarked unit was stolen north of Walker. News 2's Mike Steele explains where the vehicle was recovered, and what's being done to recover the missing items.

Changes are in store for some students in Central. When the bell rings in the school year, fourth and fifth graders will be in a different building, as the school system is leasing space from the old Starkey Academy.

The Tigers finished the 2007 football season ranked first, but they will start this year ranked sixth in at least one poll. The USA Today Coaches Poll was released on Friday, and the preseason prognosticators picked the Tigers as the sixth best team in the land.

The Southern Jaguars aren't changing their championship mentality heading into the 2008 season.
