What is Newspapers in Education?
The Advocate's Newspapers In Education (NIE) program is a public service educational program that will assist teachers in preparing today's students for tomorrow's world. The Advocate's program helps to make teaching and learning more exciting, challenging, and relevant to students of any grade level.
Additionally, through the Partnership For Children grant fund, sponsored by The Advocate and area businesses, classroom sets of newspapers are available at no charge to you or your school.
Why use newspapers in the classroom?
- It's an adult medium. Students enjoy a feeling of importance when working with the newspaper.
- It bridges the gap between the classroom and the "real world" outside. Motivation for reading and discussion is built in.
- It contains something for every student—comics, sports, editorials, advice columns, and much more.
- It is the only up-to-date text there is.
- It contains history as it happens.
